Background

Birmingham airport was opened in 1939. During the war the Air Ministry took over and developed the site, building two hard runways. In 1946 Birmingham Airport reopened to civilian flights. By 1954 there were services to Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Jersey, but the runways were too short for larger aircraft to use.  The main runway at Birmingham Airport was expanded in 1966, and this led to an increased number of jets using the airport.  As international flights became available, it was evident that an expansion programme was needed. The opening of the National Exhibition Centre just minutes away helped promote the airport in the late 1970s, and in May 1984 the Main Terminal was opened by The Queen.  More routes became available and passenger numbers using the Birmingham Airport increased dramatically.

Further development of the main runway helped attract scheduled flights to the USA and charter flights further a field, to destinations such as the Dominican Republic and Mexico.  A second terminal was opened in 1991 to accommodate the expansion. The Eurohub was designed to be used by British Airways and its partners, and to be the first terminal in the world to combine domestic and international passengers. Passenger numbers continued to increase annually, and there was continuing development of both terminals and facilities. Today, Birmingham International Airport is the UK's fifth largest airport.  There are over 40 different airlines offering thousands of direct and indirect services. Birmingham Airport has superb road and rail links, great facilities and there is ongoing improvement and development
