Background

In 1931, London Gatwick Airport was nothing more than a private airfield owned by Home Counties Aviation Services. The first terminal at Gatwick Airport was opened, following extensive development, in 1936. However, it was only in use for two years because of a lack of paved runways.  During the war, Gatwick Airport was used as a Royal Air Force base, and in 1946 it was still essentially a rural grass airfield, with barely a hint of the great days that lay ahead for it.

The big break came in 1953, when Gatwick Airport was officially named as London's second airport, and the old airport was closed for major redevelopment. When the work had been completed three years later Gatwick Airport had been transformed into a modern facility, complete with a covered pier linking terminal with aircraft - the first of its kind in the UK. In the 1980s the terminal was extended and two more piers built, though Gatwick Airport still ranked only fourth busiest in the UK.  But Gatwick Airport continued to grow with increasing charter business, and in 2001 the South and North Terminals opened as Gatwick Airport established itself as Britain's second busiest airport and an international player.
